Investigate 1790s Philadelphia

Religious freedom is protected by the Constitution today, but it was a new idea for many in the 1700s. Philadelphia was founded on the Quaker principles of tolerance which created an atmosphere of religious freedom in the new colony. In fact, the colony of Pennsylvania started as William Penn's "holy experiment". Philadelphia became a city of churches as well as a city of people. Jews, Catholics, Quakers, Protestants, and many other groups found a place here. The churches became a very important part of the communities, providing assistance to those in need.
