In 1792 Robert Bridges, James' boss, paid 250 pounds of Pennsylvania money for a two-story brick house and lot at 50 Shippen Street for James Forten. This house was about four blocks away from the sail loft where he worked. The fact that he owned a house was unique because most workers in Philadelphia, both black and white, rented their homes their entire life. James lived in this home for 14 years.
