Newspaper Article: From an 1807 London journal, the Monthly Repository of Theology and General Literature. As a tribute to merit it may be stated, that there is now resident at Philadelphia, James Forten, a man of colour, who received an education at the school established by the Society of Friends in that city, where he carries on the sail-making business with reputation to himself and satisfaction to his employers, and is engaged in that branch more extensively than any other person at Philadelphia. He possesses considerable property, acquired by his own industry... and is very much respected by the citizens generally. By looking at the above newspaper article we can learn a little bit of James Forten's character and a bit about how others thought of him. We can also learn a little about Forten's business practices. He must have been a very successful and fair businessman to earn the respect of both his employees and his employers. We also learn that he received some formal education. |
