Philadelphia was the capital of the United States from 1790 to 1800 while the new capital city was being built. President George Washington (and later President John Adams) lived in this house, using it as a presidential residence and office (like the White House today). The house was originally built in the late 1760s, but a fire in 1780 destroyed some of the upper floors. It was rebuilt and except for some of the walls, the building was torn down in the 1830s. Roll over the 1790s President's House to see where the President lives today. |
