1779-1832

Anna Payne was one of Dolley Todd’s younger sisters. Anna lived with Dolley and John Todd and helped her older sister by doing household chores and taking care of Dolley’s children. Dolley called Anna her “sister-child” because even though they were sisters, Dolley was ten years older than Anna and often felt like a mother to her.

Later Anna lived with Dolley again in Washington, D.C., where she met and married Congressman Richard Cutts in 1804. They had seven children, and named one of their daughters Dolley Payne Madison Cutts after Anna’s sister Dolley.
