1778-1848 Lucy Payne was one of Dolley Todd’s younger sisters. Lucy lived with Dolley and John Todd and helped her older sister by doing household chores and taking care of Dolley’s children. When she was fifteen years old Lucy Payne ranaway and married the president’s nephew, George Steptoe Washington. Her family and church disapproved at first, but her family eventually accepted her marriage. After her first husband died of tuberculosis, she married Supreme Court Associate Justice Thomas Todd of Kentucky. Even though they had the same last name, he was not related to Dolley’s first husband John Todd. |
