In 1793, a yellow fever epidemic occurred in Philadelphia that killed thousands of people and put the capital city of the newly formed United States of America in crisis.

For the Todd household, the impact of this epidemic was deeply felt. Dolley’s husband John died, as did his parents and his law apprentice, Isaac Heston. Dolley’s youngest son William Temple (around 8 weeks old) also died at this time, although not from yellow fever.
